In the very heart of Ukraine, among the echoes of war, an untold story of courage and mercy is hidden. This is the story of zoo workers who have become unsung heroes, ensuring the welfare of the animals under their care in the most difficult times.
Wildlife Guardians
Invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine not only brought untold suffering to its people, but also endangered countless animals. However, despite the danger and uncertainty, zookeepers remain steadfast in their mission. Against a background of constant shelling and disruption of supply chains due to the actions of the aggressor, dedicated men and women navigate dangerous conditions to forage for food, organize medical care and maintain a normal life for the animals under their care.
So, at the beginning of the war, employees of the Kyiv Zoological Park moved to its territory to provide round-the-clock care for the animals. Inventive solutions were used, including the creation of shelters in the unfinished aquarium. Large animals such as elephants and giraffes were given special attention to protect them from the stress caused by shelling. Some animals from Kyiv were evacuated to Poland, but moving large mammals is a logistically difficult task, especially in wartime.
Zoos in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv, located near the front line, are under constant threat of shelling and advancing troops. In Mykolaiv, the lack of food became a problem already in mid-March, and the zoo resorted to online ticket sales to raise funds for feeding the animals. The situation in Kharkiv was even more dire: several zoo employees were forced to evacuate the city, and at least two of the remaining employees died tragically.
Not staying away
There are several ways to support zoos in Ukraine during the ongoing crisis. Private individuals and organizations can contribute:
- Many charitable organizations and NGOs collect funds to help animal shelters still operating in Ukraine. These donations are critical to the delivery of urgently needed supplies. Organizations such as Four Paws International are active in Ukraine, helping to send resources to shelters that are almost inaccessible due to hostilities.
- Volunteering at institutions that rescue and care for animals can be more one way to help. This may include participating in rescue missions, providing veterinary services, or working in shelters.
- Raising awareness of the plight of zoo animals in Ukraine and advocating for their protection are also important. Sharing information and participating in discussions can help get more support and help for these animals.
As for state participation, the government, through initiatives such as the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center and the Euro-Atlantic Course NGO, is working to support the country in the fight against Russian aggression. In particular, this applies to helping animals affected by war. Special programs and donations have been established to provide direct support, including food, shelter and medical care at zoos and elsewhere. These initiatives focus on the protection and care of animals in Ukraine, which has become a war zone, emphasizing the need to maintain the health and safety of both people and animals during these difficult times.
